Featured New Purchases - Townsville

Each week, the Eddie Koiki Mabo Library displays recent purchases in the Learning Commons.  This week, we have over fifty new titles on display.  Here are four of them:

The True History of Chocolate by Sophie Coe and Michael Coe

Tracing the 3,000 year history of one of the world's most popular confections, from the Mexican jungles to Switzerland and beyond, Coe and Coe explore chocolate through archaeology, socioeconomics, botany, ethics, and neuroscience.  This fascinating history is sure to give you a better and deeper understanding of cocoa and its products.

Micro Monsters with David Attenborough

David Attenborough's iconic voice narrates this visually stunning series about some of the most successful animals on the planet. Jaw-dropping and occasionally stomach-churning, this nine-part series covers how arthropods live, eat, reproduce, and survive in a hostile world.

The First Third by Will Kostakis

A painfully funny yet poignant contemporary Australian story for young adults, The First Third is the witty sophomore novel from Will Kostakis, sure to appeal to fans of Nick Earls and Melina Marchetta.

Blurb:
Life is made up of three parts: in the first third, you're embarrassed by your family; in the second, you make a family of your own; and in the end, you just embarrass the family you've made.
That's how Billy's grandmother explains it, anyway. She's given him her bucket list (cue embarrassment), and now, it's his job to glue their family back together.
No pressure or anything.
Fixing his family's not going to be easy and Billy's not ready for change. But as he soon discovers, the first third has to end some time. And then what?
It's a Greek tragedy waiting to happen.

The Gods of Wheat Street

With a supremely talented cast of Australian actors, this six-part series was first broadcast on ABC in April and May 2014, and tells the story of the Freeburn clan. Odin Freeburn, head of the family, is being pulled in all directions as he tries to keep his family together. Odin has one brother in jail, another brother is in love with the daughter of the family enemy and his wife has run away to the city leaving him to raise their two daughters. To complicate matters, his employer has just died, his sister-in-law is in love with him and the spirit of his mother Eden has come back on a mission to protect the important destiny of the Freeburn family line.
