Using the Library Buildings

The library buildings in Cairns and Townsville occupy three floors, and each floor has a different purpose. If you know what the floors are for, then you can find the right floor for your study needs.

Collaborative ZoneThe ground floor is for collaboration and consultation. This is the floor where you'll find most of the library services (and the Learning Centre, and other services), where you can ask for help, and where you can find group study spaces. You can take phone calls on this floor (but we'd like you to be mindful of your neighbours and take them quietly). This is the best floor for group work. It is a "talking floor", but it's not a "loud" floor - if you think you're going to want to make noise, please move to the student spaces outside the buildings.

Quiet Zone
The first floor is a shared study space, and a designated quiet zone. While we don't mind if you talk on this floor, please keep your voices at a low level and be mindful of other users in the space. There are spaces where you can work in groups, but you should keep your conversations to a low volume. Your neighbours at another table shouldn't be able to hear your conversation. If you are working with other students, please stay in the rooms or spaces that have been configured for group work to let students working in the individual study areas have some quiet space for their work. Please don't use your phone on this floor, but move downstairs to take calls.

Silent Zone
The top floor is a silent zone for individual study. This floor is set aside for those students who need a quiet, peaceful place to concentrate on their studies. While there are group study rooms on this floor in Townsville, the study spaces on the main floor should be completely free of conversations (and please keep your volume low when using the group discussion rooms). If you think you will want to talk to your fellow students, please do not use this floor - there is plenty of room for you elsewhere in the building or in the other study spaces on campus. Remember, your fellow students who are using this floor have come because they want someplace quiet, and this is one of the only places in the university where they can find that.

And remember, each building has places where sound will travel to the floors above (and the stairwells are basically amplifiers), so be mindful of other users as you walk through our spaces.
