Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend

This year the Queen’s Birthday public holiday will be held Monday 3 October. This is in addition to the National Day of Mourning already observed on 22 September.

There is some speculation over whether the date and name of this holiday will change next year around Australia. In Queensland it is only informally known as the Queen’s Birthday; the official title is Birthday of the Sovereign. Seeing as the holiday is not celebrated on the actual birthday of the Queen (which is 21 April 1926), it may continue to be celebrated the first Monday of October. For 2022, it will remain unchanged.

Library opening hours and services on Monday 3 October are as follows:

  • The Eddie Koiki Mabo Library will be open from 1.00pm-5.00pm. The 24hr Information Commons will be accessible after hours.
  • The Cairns Library building will be accessible from 7.30am-12.00am, but no librarian services will be available. You will need to use the Chat service to speak to a librarian.
  • The Chat service will be available from 1.00pm-5.00pm, but you can leave a message with us outside of these hours and we will get back to you.
  • Special collections will be closed.
Our opening hours are as usual for Saturday and Sunday.
