Using the Library After Hours

During the Inter-Semester period (the time between the end of exams for Semester 1 and the start of Week 1 in Semester 2), the library services are only open from 8.00am-5.00pm during the week, and on Saturday afternoons from 1.00pm-5.00pm.

But that doesn't mean you can't use the library - it just means you can't get live help from a librarian outside of these times.

What can you do after hours?

1. You can access all of our online resources, like databases, Library Guides, eBooks and eJournals.

Use the search box on our home page to find what we have.

One Search can be used to find most of what's available in terms of books, journals and more, and you can use the "Refine Your Search" options to narrow to "Full Text Online" to see what you can read right now on your computer or device.

Click on the tab for Guides to search through our Library Guides. You can find Guides on research support, writing skills, statistics, referencing, evaluating sources and more. You can also find Subject Guides which will advise you on the best databases (and other sources) to us for your subject area.

If you already know what database you want to use, you can click on the Databases tab on our central search box to search for the database by name, or find it in an A-Z list.

And if you need to ask a question, you can search our FAQs to see if the answer is already waiting for you. If the answer you seek isn't already on our list, you can leave a question with us and we'll get back to you.

2. You can use our space.

The Eddie Koiki Mabo Library in Townsville has a 24 hr Information Commons which is accessed via an external door when we're closed. You can access the space using your student or staff card.

The Cairns library building is open from 7.30am-10.00pm everyday.

Both libraries have a kitchenette attached to the building, so you can bring food to heat in the microwave. Please remember that even during the slower times of the year, you still need to respect the needs of your fellow students who might be studying in block mode, and keep hot or "aromatic" food to the kitchen areas.

3. You can renew your books (DVDs, CDs, sheet music, etc)

Click on Borrow and Renew on our home page, then find the link to "Your Library Account". Log in with your username and password, and find your list of "Items Out". From here, you can renew your books (etc).

You can only renew your books online if they haven't been requested by another user. If that's the case, you'll have to return the books on time (so don't leave town without sorting out your books).

4. You can return your books (DVDs, CDs, sheet music, etc)

If you can come into either the Townsville or Cairns main campuses (not the city campuses), you can use our book return chutes to return your books.

Please remember that it's your responsibility to note when your books are due, and to make all effort to return or renew them by the due date.
