2022 JCU Library - SAGE Publishing Asia Pacific Grant for Indigenous HDR Students
2022 Winner
On September 23, 2002, the Library was very pleased to host a research seminar with a presentation by Georgia Storm, PhD candidate with the indigenous Education and Research centre. Georgia was the winner of the 2022 JCU Library – SAGE Publishing Asia Pacific Indigenous Grant for HDR Students, and the presentation was a requirement of her winning the grant.Georgia’s presentation was very well received with her research topic focusing on Exploring Indigenous Cultural Competence in Legal Practitioner Client Relations. Georgia’s research highlights the distance between Indigenous theories of practice and the legal profession. It seeks to both fill an important gap in the research and to inform practitioners interested in the intersection of legal practice and Indigeneity.

Previous winners
The inaugural winner of the SAGE grant was Tamara Sam in 2020, and the 2021 winner was Jesse King. Tammy and Jesse jointly carried out their presentations at the first event in late 2021. Tamara’s research topic is, “Staying afloat at school” – Academic buoyancy amongst Indigenous Secondary Students, while Jesse is exploring, Does the Australian Curriculum: Technologies give a Foucault about First Nations Peoples? |

The Grant
The SAGE Research Grant was first negotiated with SAGE Publishing Asia Pacific by the Library in mid-2020. As a global academic publisher of books, journals, and a growing suite of library products and services, SAGE’s mission is to build bridges to knowledge. To this end SAGE Publishing Asia Pacific are providing funding for a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) grant to Australian Indigenous HDR students at JCU. The scholarship is subject to the provisions of the James Cook University Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy
With support from the Office of Advancement, a formal agreement was drawn up with SAGE Publishing, and agreed that the grant would be negotiated annually on an ongoing basis. The Grant amounts to a one-off payment to the value of $3,000 to support the student’s research activities. Eligibility criteria for the grant include: Identification as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, enrolment in a JCU Higher Degree Research program at a JCU Australian Tropical Campus (Townsville, Cairns or Online).
The Library looks forward to continuing to support JCU Indigenous Higher Degree by Research candidates for the foreseeable future. We are grateful to the Indigenous Education and Research Centre for their support in hosting the seminars, and the Graduate Research School in helping promote the Grant.
