Winning nominations for JCU: 2024 OE Awards for Excellence

We are thrilled to announce that JCU's contribution to the advancement of Open Educational Resources and practices has been recognised globally at the recent OE Awards for Excellence. The JCU led collaboration, Confident Supervisors: Creating Independent Researchers, is a joint winner of the Significant Impact OER category of the Open Assets Awards section, alongside Frontiers for Young Minds (a science engagement platform for primary school aged children that is well worth a look).

These awards celebrate the production, curation and distribution of educational assets that encourage free and open use and adaptation by others. The judges praised this multi-university, collaboratively authored ebook as an invaluable resource for academic supervisors of graduate students, who often find themselves unprepared for this role. The JCU Library Open ebook team received a special mention for its adherence to Universal Design principals and its high standards for copyright compliance, editing and formatting. You can read more about the award on the OE Awards for Excellence webpage. Hearty congratulations to the Confident Supervisors team, including editors Susan Gasson, Jillian Blacker, Ian Stoodley, Abbe Winter and Christine Bruce. You can view this title and many other quality resources published by JCU Open ebooks within our James Cook University Open eBooks Collection.

We are also thrilled to announce that the CAUL Open Educational Resources Collective is the winner of the Open Collaboration category of the Open Practices Awards section. The JCU library has been an active member and valued contributor of this collective since its inception. The collective was admired by the judges for being an invaluable supporter of collaborative open practices within our region. Special mention was made of the Legal Research Skills: An Australian Law Guide (2023 edition) open ebook, a collaborative effort led by JCU. The book has been viewed an astounding 25,410 times, and appears in catalogues all over the world. Way to go CAUL!

Finally, congratulations not only to all of the winners and those shortlisted in the 2024 OE Awards for Excellence (which you can read about in more detail on the OE Awards for Excellence webpage), but also to all of those who participated in these awards, and to those who participate every day in the global open access community through the creation and distribution of OER as well as the adoption and promotion of OE practices. Open Access and Open Education are truly global movements, and the collaboration and support that may be found within these communities is exceptional.
