Bridging Now to Next: Reconciliation Week 2025

The National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2025 theme, "Bridging Now to Next," represents the link between the past, present, and future in the ongoing journey of reconciliation.

Australia's history regarding reconciliation is one of many twists and turns, but while progress doesn't always take the form we expect, we are making progress. "Bridging Now to Next" encourages all Australians to unite, look forward, and advance together, using lessons from the past to guide our progress.

The Australian native plants depicted in this year's artwork (created by Kalkadoon woman Bree Buttenshaw) are known for their ability to withstand trying conditions and regenerate after disasters, and were chosen to embody themes of perseverance, unity, and hope.

The dates for National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) are chosen to acknowledge the dates of the 1967 Referendum and the Mabo Decision.

The JCU Library has a number of resources regarding these events (see the links above), and we have a close association with Eddie Koiki Mabo. The main library building on the Bebegu Yumba campus (Douglas, Townsville) is named in his honour, as he was a frequent visitor to the library when he worked at JCU.

Come to the Mabo Library in person to see the Interpretive Wall (near the cafe) and the Cenotaph (near the southern entrance to the library). Or visit our Mabo Timeline for a virtual tour of the interpretive wall.
