International Nurses Day 2025: Celebrating Nurses and Sharing Knowledge Openly

International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12 each year to honour the dedication, compassion, and impact of nurses around the world. The date marks the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, who championed principles such as patient confidentiality, environments conducive to healing, and compassionate care.

The Australian College of Nurses (2024) encourages reflection on the vital role nurses play in the communities they serve. At JCU Library, we proudly support our Nursing and Midwifery students and academics through access to high-quality resources, research support, and open educational initiatives.

📘 New Release: Digital Health for Nursing and Midwifery in Australia

To mark this year’s celebration, we’re excited to highlight the release of four chapters of a new open-access resource: Digital Health for Nursing and Midwifery in Australia. This Pressbook is designed to equip nursing and health students with essential knowledge about digital health, including:

  • Electronic health records
  • Telehealth and virtual care
  • Data privacy and ethics
  • Digital literacy for healthcare professionals

The publication is the result of a collaborative effort between multiple Australian universities, including JCU, La Trobe, Uni SA and ACU. This release is the first of three tranches slated for 2025/2026, and the editorial team describes this resource as a "living textbook", meaning that the book will evolve according to collective feedback received and developments in learning and teaching practices. 📚 JCU’s Commitment to Open Education

JCU Nursing academics have shown a strong commitment to equitable access to information. As part of the JCU Library Open Education Program, three open textbooks have been published:

The creation of these resources supports the Textbook Affordability Project, which aims to reduce the financial burden on students by identifying free-for-student alternatives to commercial textbooks.

📣 Get Involved

JCU Library invites collaboration with first-year core subject stakeholders to explore open alternatives and share stories that support this transformative project. Connect with us to learn more or contribute to the 2024–2025 Textbook Affordability Project.
