In recognition of World Anatomy Day on 15th October 2026, JCU Library is proud to announce the release of Slide into Histology. This open text has been authored by anatomy and histology experts from the JCU College of Medicine and Dentistry and peer reviewed by external academics with expertise in these disciplines.
Developed specifically for JCU histology and biomedical science students, while also supporting anyone studying histology, this peer reviewed resource focuses on the core tissue types and organ systems most relevant to student learning and future professional practice.
To promote student engagement and support a range of learning approaches, this textbook incorporates interactive features such as quizzes, multimedia content and other activities designed to enhance understanding and reinforce key concepts.
This ebook promotes equitable access to medical science students by providing students with a zero-cost, high quality textbook alternative. This comprehensive, multi-disciplinary resource:
- Replaces three prescribed textbooks for five 1st year and nine later year subjects
- Saves approximately 1729 students $284 each
- Offers potential student savings of $491,036 each year.
The development of this resource was facilitated by the JCU Open Educational Resources Program.
The JCU Open Educational Resources Program is a project in the Education Division, spearheaded by JCU Library. The aim of the project is two-fold:
- To support lecturers in adopting, adapting and creating Open Educational Resources including textbooks in order to better support the learning of our students at JCU.
- To provide a digital-first and place-based learning resource that provides an equivalent experience for all JCU students regardless of attendance mode and location.
