Store items now available

JCU Library (Townsville) has completed the reorganisation of its store collection (see previous news item). Items marked in Tropicat (library catalogue) as being in the P Store, S Store, X Store or Y Store collections are now available.

Tips for EndNote: Authors' Names

EndNote has very particular rules about how to format authors' names so that they appear correctly in your in-text citations and reference lists. Each author has to appear on a separate line in the Author field of the record, and *must* follow one of the following two patterns: Smith, John OR John Smith EndNote can take either of those patterns to make the name appear in the right format in your paper (you can use initials instead of the authors' given names). This can get a little tricky if your author is a company or corporation (like, say, James Cook University Library ) or a name like Dalai Lama or Dr. Seuss , which have to be kept in order rather than broken into the surname, initial pattern. If you simply type James Cook University Library into the Author field, EndNote will put it in your in-text citations like this: (Library, 2015) .* And it will put it in your reference list like this: Library, J.C.U. (2012). The secret is the comma. ...

That's gammon!

There has been some brouhaha* in social media circles of late concerning a couple of My Kitchen Rules contestants from regional Queensland who used the word "gammon" during a broadcast of the popular reality TV show. Apparently, many people throughout the country had no idea what the word meant. They should have consulted the Macquarie Dictionary , which is one of the best sources of Australian words in the world. If they had, they would have quickly discovered that: "Gammon" is a word that came over with the convict settlers, and is "flash slang" - part of the extensive and colourful vocabulary use by convicts (and heavily influenced by British thieves' slang). When used as an adjective, it means "not true" or "fake". As a verb, it means "to lie or fib" or "to kid". And, as an interjection, it is used to imply disbelief (as in "yer gammon!").
