Feral Australians

Red imported fire ant - Solenopsis invicta
Cane toad - Bufo marinus
What do Asian green mussels, cane toads, cats, fire ants, foxes, goats, lantana, pigs, salvinia, siam weed, and water buffalo have in common? They are all species that have been introduced since European settlement and have become invasive.  Invasive species cause a huge amount of damage to our environment.  They cost the nation millions of dollars in lost production each year, and reduce habitat and compete for food with our native species.  Some introduced species like cats and foxes also hunt native animals, and have been responsible for the disappearance of native animals from many areas.

If you are interested in alien species invasion, come and have a look at the display on the first floor of the Eddie Koiki Mabo Library.
