Expedition to the Great Barrier Reef 1928-1929 - Part 1

This is the first in a series of articles exploring the contribution of one of the most influential figures in the history of marine science – Sir Charles Maurice Yonge – to our knowledge and appreciation of the Great Barrier Reef. In July 1928, a group of British and Australian scientists embarked on an expedition to investigate the greatest coral reef in the world - the Great Barrier Reef - off the coast of Queensland. Jointly funded by Australian and British interests, the expedition sought to spend a year at Low Isles, near Port Douglas, investigating the biological and geological complexities of the reef. The expedition was primarily about discovering the conditions under which coral reefs existed and flourished, however it also had an economic objective: to investigate the commercial potential of the reef’s resources. That's gammon!

There has been some brouhaha* in social media circles of late concerning a couple of My Kitchen Rules contestants from regional Queensland who used the word "gammon" during a broadcast of the popular reality TV show. Apparently, many people throughout the country had no idea what the word meant. They should have consulted the Macquarie Dictionary , which is one of the best sources of Australian words in the world. If they had, they would have quickly discovered that: "Gammon" is a word that came over with the convict settlers, and is "flash slang" - part of the extensive and colourful vocabulary use by convicts (and heavily influenced by British thieves' slang). When used as an adjective, it means "not true" or "fake". As a verb, it means "to lie or fib" or "to kid". And, as an interjection, it is used to imply disbelief (as in "yer gammon!"). JCU Library Celebrates Winners of 2024 Green Open Access Competition

The “Bring Out Your Dead” Green Open Access Initiative JCU Library is pleased to announce the winners of its inaugural “Bring Out Your Dead” Green Open Access competition. The Open Access Week competition sought to increase the number of Open Access documents in JCU’s online institutional repository, ResearchOnline@JCU , making more of the university’s research output freely available to the public. From 1 August to 18 November, we invited researchers to send through the peer-reviewed author accepted manuscripts of published journal articles from the last five years that were still locked behind a paywall. We added these manuscripts to the existing publication records to bring the articles new life through Open Access. Through the competition, we were able to make 141 articles and book chapters free to read for researchers and members of the public.
