Oxford English Dictionary - March 2016 Update

With the March 2016 update more than 500 new words, phrases, and senses have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).

New words include some that may be familiar to the younger generation, such as vlog (first used in 2002) and bro hug (2001), as well as a mass of additions to the entries for football/soccer, including five-a-side (first used as a verb in reference to football in 1881 and as a noun in 1883), and a comprehensive update to the entry for luck.

Jonathan Dent, Senior Assistant Editor of the OED has written a fascinating article on the new and revised words and meanings that can be found in this update, which is well worth a read. In particular, check out the phrase how’s your father and the history of Dad’s Army!
