Library and Information Week is a time to celebrate the impact that library and information services staff have throughout Australia, whether in the community, at work or personally.
The theme this year is Adventures in Space and Time. Clearly libraries have reimagined themselves over the years, with resources now available online 24/7, however libraries’ commitment to providing fair and equitable access to information remains unchanged. The acquisition, organisation and discovery of resources, whether print or electronic, continue to be managed by library staff.
At the start of 2021, the Library implemented a new system which includes improved features for searching, saving and organising results in One Search. For help in getting the most from the new One Search, consult the Using One Search guide or ask one of our friendly staff.
The Library is also keen to promote the use of Open Education Resources (OERs). Our OER guide has links to ‘open’ books and textbooks, journals, images, audio and video that can be legally shared and adapted for teaching and learning at no cost. Your liaison librarian can help you find resources tailored to your specific discipline.
JCU Special Collections continues to accept new donations of material that have significance to North Queensland. These items are available to view in their original, physical state and/or as digitised copies via the NQ Heritage online repository. If you missed the 50 Treasures exhibition last year, why not take a virtual tour, read the exhibition catalogue or the 50 Treasures blog posts? Other collections that can be viewed in the virtual space include the North Queensland Collection, the JCU Art Collection, and the Rare Book Collection. You can view our physical Special Collections by making an appointment. There’s a treasure trove of history to be discovered!
With so much information now available, it’s good to know that a librarian can be your guide. We hope you will enjoy exploring some of our resources this week, and look forward to seeing you in the library or online.
