Open Access Week: October 25 – 31

It Matters How We Open Knowledge: Building Structural Equity

Open Access – Open Science is a movement to make research outputs available to all instead of being locked behind a paywall. Open Access Week is celebrated worldwide and is an opportunity to promote and learn about the benefits of Open Access publishing and the latest developments occurring world wide. Attend the events listed below to learn more about Open Access and why it is important for building equity in scientific research information.

Open Access publications are digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions (Suber 2012). The Open Access movement is based on the philosophy that knowledge derived from public funding should be freely accessible for public use.

Open Access can make the difference between being cited and not cited. The easier it is to access a work, the more likely it is to be downloaded, read and cited. Increasingly, funding agencies are placing Open Access conditions on the publications resulting from research grants, requiring you to deposit a copy of your article in your institution’s Repository, ResearchOnline@JCU

For more detailed information on Open Access visit the JCU library guide on Open Access Publishing.
