New eBook Release: Eddie Koiki Mabo: History in the Making

In 2022, to mark the 30th anniversary of the Mabo Decision, JCU Library staff have developed an open eBook to provide a focus on the timeline of Eddie Koiki Mabo’s life, the Mabo Decision and the ways in which Eddie Koiki Mabo has been honoured and celebrated over the past few decades.

As well as illustrating Mabo’s life and making connections with other resources for further reading, the book contains accompanying educational material that has been mapped to the National Curriculum and available under a Creative Commons license for use in schools all over Australia. The eBook has been a successful partnership with a number of contributors including North Queensland high school teachers, Kristen Harrison and Nanette Radeck.

Through the JCU Open Education Initiative, this book has been made freely available, but due to the personal and cultural concerns of the various families who have given us permission to use their photos, the text and images of the book itself are not to be copied, distributed or altered without permission.

The teaching material included in the book is available under a CC BY license and may be copied, adapted and distributed freely.

Eddie Koiki Mabo: History in the Making, is freely available to read or download via JCU Open eBooks.

The JCU Open Education Initiative

The JCU Open Education Initiative is a project in the Education Division, spearheaded by JCU Library. The aim of the project is two-fold:
  • To support lecturers in adopting, adapting and creating Open Educational Resources including textbooks and workbooks in order to better support the learning of our students at JCU
  • To make information about the people and places of the Tropics more widely accessible and understood. More than 40% of the world's population live in the Tropics and 40% of the world's surface is within the Tropics, but the area is often under represented in teaching materials.
