Open Access Week 2022

Open Access is defined as the principles and practices that allow the free flow of information online, without the barrier of cost to the reader (Open Access Australasia, 2022). JCU Library provides support for open access to the University academic and research community in a number of different ways.

Here are 5 things that the JCU library is doing in the world of open access:

1. Open access webinar. This years theme is 'Open for climate justice'. The webinar will have two speakers and will begin at 1pm on the 25/10/2022.

Professor Susan Harris Rimmer

Speaker 1: Professor Susan Harris Rimmer, Director, Griffith University Policy Innovation Hub. Cruel Summer: A Climate Justice Manifesto for Extreme Heat Events.

Dr Maxine Newlands

Speaker 2: Dr Maxine Newlands, Senior Lecturer, Political Science, James Cook University. Justice for the Reef: A Political Scientist's Perspective of Open Access and Climate Justice

2. Open Access Awards.
  • ECR Open Access Champion 2022 Award. We want to celebrate our early career researchers who publish their research open access. This will awarded to the JCU ECR who, in the opinion of an expert judging panel, has made the greatest contribution to Open Access through their research publications within the previous three years.
  • HDR Open Access Advocate Award 2022. The competition is open to all JCU Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates, with a prize awarded for the best short communication that answers the question: How does Open Access help the cause of climate justice?
3. Read and Publish agreements. One of the exciting new initiatives that has been implemented by the Library this year is Read and Publish Agreements. Traditionally, the author pays an article processing charge (APC) to publish open access. Publishing under the new agreements, the author no longer pays the publishing fee as it is covered by the library’s subscription payments.

4. JCU open eBooks. Since the 2021 JCU library has assisted in the creation and publication of 10 open eBooks, with many more in production. These eBooks can be found on the JCU Pressbook platform. Open eBooks (also known as open educational resources) on this platform are created and reviewed by university staff and licensed under an open copyright license.

5. ResearchOnline@JCU is an online archive for the collection, preservation, and dissemination of JCU research outputs. The library encourages all authors to deposit an open access version of their output (i.e., Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) into ResearchOnline@JCU, when the published version is not freely available. This is in accordance with the University’s Open Scholarship Policy
