2023 Winner

Gerry Turpin, Masters by Research Candidate, JCU College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences (CPHMVS) and Senior Ethnobotanist, Australian Tropical Herbarium, has won the 2023 JCU Library – Sage Publishing Asia Pacific Indigenous Grant for HDR Students.

As part of the grant requirements, Gerry carried out a presentation of his research at a webinar hosted by the Library at the Indigenous Education and Research Centre on 28 September. Gerry’s research focuses on the Ethnobotanical Identification and Biological Activities of Selected Mbabaram Medicinal Plants.

Through this research he aims to:
  • Document the ethnomedical knowledge of Mbabaram Aboriginal community ethnographic techniques and archival information sources.
  • Identify five Mbabaram Aboriginal medicinal plants.
  • Determine major classes of phytochemicals of the crude extracts of five selected Mbabaram Aboriginal plants using natural products techniques.
  • Assess the toxicity, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the selected plants
This annual grant was first negotiated with Sage Publishing in 2020 to the value of $3,000 and was increased to $5,000 this year.

The Grant

The SAGE Research Grant was first negotiated with SAGE Publications Asia Pacific by the Library in mid-2020. As a global academic publisher of books, journals, and a growing suite of library products and services, SAGE’s mission is to build bridges to knowledge. To this end, SAGE Publications Asia Pacific are providing funding for a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) grant to Australian Indigenous HDR students at JCU. The scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy

initially amounted to a one-off payment to the value of $3,000 but has now been increased to $5,000, to support the student’s research activities. Eligibility criteria for the grant include identification as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and enrolment in a JCU Higher Degree Research program at one of JCU’s Australian Tropical Campuses (Townsville, Cairns or Online).

The Library looks forward to continuing to support JCU Indigenous Higher Degree by Research candidates for the foreseeable future. We are grateful to the Indigenous Education and Research Centre for their support in hosting the seminars, and the Graduate Research School in helping promote the Grant.
