Open Access Week Awards 2023 @JCU Library

We are excited to announce the winners of the Open Access Awards for this year.

We presented three open access awards, two of which have been in place since 2020:
  • Higher Degree Research (HDR) Open Access Advocate Award (jointly presented with the Graduate Research School [GRS])
  • Early Career Research (ECR) Open Access Champion Award
And this year we were pleased to introduce a third award:
  • Open Education Champion (OE) Award

The Awards were presented at afternoon tea events on 23 October at each of the three campuses, in Cairns, Townsville and Singapore.

2023 HDR OPEN ACCESS ADVOCATE AWARDS

JCU HDR candidates were invited to submit entries to a competition to answer the question, “How does Open Access help the cause of Community over Commercialisation?

Two categories were offered in the competition: Scholarly/Informational Communication and Artistic Expression:

The 2023 winners are:
  • Category 1 Winner: Scholarly/informational communication: Jeffrey Ling Min Than, JCU Singapore
  • Category 2 Winner: Artistic expressions: Catherine Toh Mui Hua, JCU Singapore
  • Category 1 Highly Commended: Scholarly/informational communication: Hettiwattage Harshani Dedunu, College of Business, Law and Governance
Each of the overall winners received a $200 book voucher, and an Open Access trophy jointly sponsored by JCU Library and the GRS.

2023 ECR OPEN ACCESS CHAMPION AWARDS

The ECR Open Access Champion 2023 Award is awarded to the JCU ECR/s who, in the opinion of an expert judging panel, have made the greatest contribution to Open Access through their research publications within the previous three years.

The winners of the 2023 Awards are:
  • ECR Open Access Champion: Dr Ailie McDowall, Senior Lecturer, Indigenous Education and Research Centre
  • ECR Green Open Access Champion: Dr Sterling Tebbett, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Marine Ecology, College of Science and Engineering
  • Highly Commended for open access publishing: Dr Emma Rehn, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, College of Arts, Society and Education
The winners each received a $200 book voucher each and an OA trophy.

2023 OPEN EDUCATION CHAMPION AWARD

The inaugural Open Education Champion 2023 Award was presented to the JCU staff member who made the greatest contribution to Open Education during the JCU Open Education Initiative pilot which ran from 2021-2022
  • Open Education Champion: Dr Carmen Reaiche, Associate Professor, College of Business, Law and Governance who received a $200 prize and an OA trophy
