Christmas-New Year Break

Does the Library shut down over the Christmas/New Year Break?

Yes.

The library will be closing on 12pm Friday, 22nd of December 2023 and re-opening on Tuesday, 2nd of January 2024 at 8am.

Keep an eye on our Opening Hours (especially if you are in Cairns at the moment).

Can I come in and use the computers in the after-hours spaces?

No.

The JCU campuses will be closed during this time, including the 24 hour spaces. This is a time when IT run maintenance on the computer rooms throughout campus.

Only residential students and essential staff are to be on campus during the closure.

What if my library books are due?

The library's systems are designed to ignore days when the library is closed, so your books will not be due during this week.

Why not borrow some holiday reading this week, before we close? All of the books on our displays are available for loan, and we have both fiction and recreational non-fiction available in our collection.

N.B.: If you are going to be away in January (and unable to return your books if they are recalled), or your contract is going to expire soon, you should return your books before we close, if possible. All of the material in the general collection will automatically renew unless a) someone requests it, or b) your membership expires. If you wish to avoid fines, make sure your books are returned before you leave.

If I have a fine, can I pay it when the library is closed?

Yes.

You can pay any outstanding fines online while the library is closed. If you go to My Library Account and go to your fines, click on the link to "Pay Fine" to be taken to the JCU Pay page.

Can I get help online while the library is closed?

All library services will be closed, including chat.

If you need help, you can:

  • Check our FAQs (search from the Tab on our homepage, or go straight to LibAnswers)
  • Use the Tab on our homepage to search through our Library Guides (or go straight to our Guides)
  • Leave a question with us using our Contact Form, and we will get back to you when we re-open in 2024.
Our electronic systems will still be available during this time, so you will be able to search for eBooks and journal articles using One Search or our databases.

Stay safe over the break, and we look forward to seeing you again in 2024!
