On this day, James Cook University celebrates the 16th anniversary of the renaming of our iconic library on the Bebegu Yumba Campus (Townsville) to the Eddie Koiki Mabo Library.
In 2008, JCU Vice Chancellor, Professor Sandra Harding noted that the naming of the library will “forever commemorate the link between the man who changed the land laws in Australia and James Cook University.”
Eddie Koiki Mabo was one of the most important historical figures to have spent time at the University. Employed at JCU as a groundsman, he was also a student, guest lecturer, and colleague and friend of JCU staff and students.
It was during his time as an employee at JCU that Koiki spent many hours reading, studying and researching law and land rights in the library that is now named after him. You can learn more about Koiki and his connection to JCU by visiting the Mabo Interpretative Wall on ground floor of the library or by reading the library's free eBook titled "Eddie Koiki Mabo: History in the Making".
To mark the renaming anniversary each year, JCU Library endeavours to hold an art exhibition to coincide with the naming anniversary.
This year’s exhibition will showcase an exciting selection of 26 artworks by 23 Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists whose work features in the James Cook University Art Collection. Stay posted for more information on the exhibition titled, Insights: A selection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art from the James Cook University Art Collection, which will be on display in the Eddie Koiki Mabo Library from this Friday 24th May until Friday the 26th July 2024.
