Pacific French Intermediate Workbook is the creation of Dr Florence Boulard, the Associate Dean Learning and Teaching for the College of Arts, Society and Education at James Cook University and the director of the Academy of Modern Languages at James Cook University.
Dr Boulard has been teaching French for many years and she has been working closely with high school-based language teachers to help foster an interest in the French language spoken in the Pacific.
Many people in Australia want to learn French in order to visit our neighbours: New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Wallis & Futuna and French Polynesia. However, most of the books and resources for learning French focus on the kind of French spoken in Paris.
Our Pacific neighbours have a rich and vibrant culture that has shaped the language they use, and the French spoken in the Pacific island countries has a unique flavour. Dr Boulard's new book seeks to offer French learners a chance to improve their language skills and their Pacific Literacy, learning more about the culture of our East-side neighbours.
This workbook is for people who already have a basic understanding of French and are seeking to move to the next level. If you are familiar with the CEFR Levels, the book is set for French learners with an A2 level or higher.1
Florence hopes the book will be used by high school teachers all over the world to support French language students and contribute towards a better understanding of the Pacific cultures.
Dr Boulard is hoping to make more Pacific French resources for other language levels so keep an eye out for a “Foundation” and “Advanced” workbook in the future.
The JCU Open Education Initiative is a project by the Division of Student Life, spearheaded by the JCU Library. The aim of the project is twofold. We hope to support lecturers in adopting, adapting and creating Open Educational Resources including Textbooks and Workbooks in order to better support the learning of our students here at JCU. We also hope to make information about the people and places of the Tropics more widely accessible and understood. More than 40% of the world's population live in the Tropics and 40% of the world's surface is within the Tropics, but the area is often under represented in teaching materials.
Dr Boulard's new book shines a light on the French spoken in the Pacific, and come just in time for the opening of international boarders. We hope that you'll think of visiting more of our topical and Pacific neighbours as you make your travel plans, and that this eBook will help you explore our beautiful region.
