Libguides are here!

LibGuides are a major new Library web resource to support study and teaching.

Check out the LibGuide for your subject and tell us what you think and how we can make it work better for you!

The LibGuides software is designed especially for libraries and is used by an extensive worldwide community of major Universities. Each LibGuide is created on an Information Literacy framework to enhance JCU’s genric skills requirements.

FEATURES:

Tabbed content:Easy to navigate tabs allow us to present a lot of information in a small space. Students get to the important material quickly and drop-down menus expand the available “real estate”.

Web 2.0: LibGuides help improve & expand communication channels with students. We can embed multimedia objects inside guides - videos, RSS feeds, podcasts, widgets, web chat or instant messaging etc. Students can share their favourite LibGuides on any social bookmarking site, including Facebook and they can also email links to guides to friends. Users can also respond to polls, feedback boxes, add comments and vote of the usefulness of information.

Widgets: We can create LibGuides widgets that can be embedded into any webpage, blog, or LearnJCU site. The widget will update automatically whenever there is new content.

Check out a LibGuide today.

Townsville Library Workshops - Week 1!!

Finding Journal Articles
Journal articles are excellent sources of information for assignments and essays. Impress your lecturers by finding journal articles not on your reading list!
This session will guide you through the process of accessing and searching the Library's journal databases, which provide references to journal articles and sometimes the full text. After attending this session you will be able to search databases relevant to your subject area and retrieve journal articles.
Get to the Infohelp training room on the top floor of the library (18.229) at the following times:
Tuesday 23/2 at 4 pm
Wednesday 24/2 at 9am & 3pm
Thursday 25/2 at 10am & 2pm
P.S. Nobody has guessed the curlew's name yet! We've got some great names and even his scientific name, but not the name he told us when he first turned up at the library, looking for a gig. Look at the blog post below this one if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Win a uni bookshop voucher!

It's not going to be enough to buy you a whole book, library budgets being what they are and textbook prices being what they are but it's better than paying full price.

All you have to do is have a look at our friend the big curlew, (see here for the backstory) and tell us what his name is.

That was a clue right there. Another one: he was made for Australia Day so he just might have a name that he shares with other Aussies. Maybe an Aussie Rules footballer, a former premier and a guy who rides motorbikes share the name?

Enter in the comments section here or drop your answer into the entry box on the first floor of the library.

*Winner of $20 book voucher drawn end of February, only staff and students at JCU can win.

Changes to 5500* Helpdesk Phone Number

From Wednesday 10th February 2010, there will be a change to the call management Helpdesk service available to JCU students and staff across the Townsville and Cairns campuses. In cooperation with Library & Information Services and Student and Academic Services, ITR are initiating the changes to address the outcomes from the IT Service Quality Survey conducted with JCU staff in September 2009. The intent is to provide the best call management service within available resources.

Please note that the Library Infohelp desk will continue to offer in person first level IT support for students during library opening hours.

The new HelpDesk Call Centre will be available on the 5500* number. Callers dialling 5500* will be presented with a voice menu offering 4 options which can be chosen by selecting that number on the keypad:
  • Option 1 will push your call to the IT Helpdesk;
  • Option 2 will push your call to the Library;
  • Option 3 will push your call to Student Admissions/ Enquiries;
  • Option 4 will provide information on the current status of IT Services.
Callers will only have to remember one number 5500*. The new system provides us with the ability to have ITR staff located in Cairns and Townsville answer calls on the 5500* number thus providing an improved and equitable service across both campuses.

* (NB. For external callers, the phone number is: (07) 4781 5500)
