World Book & Copyright Day - April 23

By celebrating this Day throughout the world, UNESCO seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. 23 April: a symbolic date for world literature for on this date and in the same year of 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. Web of Knowledge sessions at JCU

JCU library is offering expert training for staff and postgraduate students in using the Web of Knowledge to enhance their research. Steven Werkheiser – visiting Thomson Reuters’ trainer from Sydney will be presenting. ANZAC Day display

To remember our fallen soldiers, the Eddie Koiki Mabo Library currently has on display a collection of books and WWI memorabilia. Items on display include photographs, medals, helmets and an Australia Army uniform from the First World War. The display will be up until the 1st of May; all are welcome to come and have a look.

CopyPrint Scheduled Outage

The Student and Staff printing and photocopying service (including CopyPrint ) will be offline for system maintenance from 6am to 9am Friday 24/4/09. There will be no guarantee that either printing or photocopying will be enabled at either the Townsville or Cairns campuses during this maintenance window. The Library and ITR apologise for any inconvenience this outage will cause.

Library System Upgrade Friday 24th April

The JCU Library will be applying an upgrade to its integrated library system from 6-10am on Friday 24 th April. Library loans and returns should not be affected. The catalogue ( Tropicat ) will not be available until the end of the upgrade period. Library staff can assist with the availability and location of items while Tropicat is unavailable. We apologise for any inconvenience.

EndNote workshop - Cairns Library

There will be an EndNote workshop in the Cairns Library at 2pm on Friday April 17. The session will include: how to manage your references and downloaded articles; download and store references from Google Scholar create a correctly formatted reference list. This session will run for 2 hours.

Scheduled Outage Cancelled - Computer Network Core Maintenance 19th-20th April 2009

Update 16 April 2009: The scheduled maintenance advertised in the following bulletin has now been cancelled. Previous Bulletin: Maintenance of the computer network core is scheduled from midday April 19 till 8.00am Monday April 20. During this period possible interruptions to ALL services may be experienced. The work is in response to the network outage experienced on the 3rd of April 2009. We are working closely with the equipment vendor to finalise the issue. IT&R apologise for any inconvenience. If after 8.00am on Monday April 20 you are still experiencing problems please contact InfoHelp on x5500.

EndNote workshop - Cairns Library

There will be an introduction to EndNote at the Cairns library on April 9 at 3pm. Ask at the Infohelp desk on Level 1 of the library.

Library Opening Hours: Easter

Townsville : The Eddie Koiki Mabo Library will be closed from 10.30pm Thursday 9th April and will reopen from 1-5pm on Monday 13th April. On Monday 13th April there is likely to be no air conditioning in the Library due to essential maintenance While air circulation will still be operational, the Library may have to close at short notice depending on conditions. Cairns : The Library will be closed from 9pm Thursday 9th April and will reopen from 1pm-5pm Monday 13th April. Computer Labs : All general access computer labs will be open 24x7 over the Easter break. Short Term Loans : Students can borrow 3 items from the 2 Hour Loan Collection on Thursday 9th April, overnight from 8pm. Items on overnight loan need to be returned by 1.30pm on Monday 13th April.

Powerful Presentations

This one-hour workshop will introduce participants to the basics of presentation. This ‘hands on’ workshop will get you started and introduce you to the key features of Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and the art of presenting. There is no need to register for these sessions – just show up on the day. Places are limited to 20 per session. Workshop times: Tuesday 7 April, 10 am (Cairns Library B1.105) Wednesday 8 April, 11 am (Cairns Library B1.104)

Introduction to Endnote Workshops

Introductory EndNote workshops will be offered in April, covering: Introduction to EndNote Cite while you write: how EndNote interacts with word Importing references using filter files and connection files The sessions will be demonstration sessions for students who want an overview of Endnote. Feel free to bring along your laptop and follow the trainer.
